About Shelagh

My Alexander Technique practice is based in St John's Wood, London.

I started studying the Alexander Technique while at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, on the recommendation of my flute teacher.

Years later, after chronic shoulder problems led to surgery, I joined the training course run by Walter and Dilys Carrington at the Constructive Teaching Centre in Holland Park in London.

Not only did I find a way of addressing the shoulder pain, I found that I benefited in other ways: I was less stressed, more able to manage my daily routine and to handle those emergencies that life throws at us when we’re least prepared. The same old problems may come back, but I’m better able to deal with them.

The chemistry between teacher and client is fundamental, which is why I suggest a trial first session, to talk through the client’s interests and concerns, and get acquainted.

In the Alexander Technique, people are encouraged to engage in their own learning. Different people respond to different learning styles – aural, oral, visual and kinaesthetic. Incorporating them all into lessons is an on-going goal and challenge. Curiosity is key. Humans are curious creatures: if we are in health and balance, we continue to explore the world around us throughout our lives.
