Over time, unconsciously holding on to the tensions of everyday life can leave us in a state of continual, low-grade stress. We adapt, but we pay the price: tension headaches, RSI, backaches, shoulder pain. The list of maladies to which poor use of ourselves contributes is long. And it can be worse when we think we’re relaxed: collapsing into a chair or onto the sofa can mean extra strain in areas (the lower back for example) that become so habitually tense the muscles simply cannot relax, while other muscles don't work at all, leading over the long term to an imbalance in muscle tone. The Alexander Technique teaches you how to avoid unnecessary strain and tension whatever you choose to do. Giving yourself the chance to pause, to think before you act, allows the possibility of noticing what you’re REALLY doing, rather than what you think you’re doing. The Alexander Technique looks at the whole person, in context, top to toe, mental as well as physical habits. The Alexander Technique makes a lot more sense when you experience it. Book a session with Shelagh to see what the Alexander Technique is about. AT helps with...
The Technique is primarily educational in nature, but learning and applying it may have therapeutic benefits and preventive consequences for the health of the individual. AT can help people deal better with chronic medical conditions such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, M.E. or osteoporosis. By applying the Alexander Technique people can become alert, balanced relaxed, focused, effective and confident. Teachers do not offer a cure; they can help motivated people change detrimental learned habits and ways of doing things. |
