The combination of training as a DSE assessor and Alexander Technique teacher means that I can look at the whole working environment, putting the person at the centre. Almost everyone uses a computer, either as part of work or leisure. As we spend longer using computers, it becomes even more important to be sure that they are set up in a way that encourages good postural habits. Desks and especially chairs can be improved for comfort, but the way the person uses the equipment is equally important. People tend to two extremes: slumping in front of the screen or trying to hold themselves rigidly upright. Either extreme is tiring, because neither is what our bodies are designed for.
People who use computers in the course of their work are covered by Health and Safety legislation to ensure that workstations are safe An assessment covers the following areas: the suitability and height of the chair and desk; the height and positioning of the monitor; the keyboard and mouse arrangement; and the arrangement of the desk and essential items on it. Lighting is also a crucial factor in the working environment, as is well-arranged access to frequently used storage. Much can be done by simply looking at and re-arranging the work area. |

and comfortable working environments. I am a qualified Display Screen Equipment Assessor. I can evaluate people’s workplaces, in large organisations or home offices, to see whether the set up meets guidelines and whether it could be improved.
